Squash vine borers, a species of sesiid moth, overwinter in soil and then tunnel into squash stems and eat their way through, leaving sawdust-like frass (or waste) behind. Wrapping lower stems with a little aluminum foil may slow borers, but there’s really no way to stop them. If they’re a problem (particularly in warmer regions like the South), look for borer-resistant varieties, or plant summer squash in large containers, where they will look great and thrive.

The blossoms of all squash varieties are edible, but don’t pick them all or you won’t have any fruit. Male flowers arrive first — pick a few of these and leave a few to pollinate the female flowers that arrive later.

You’ll know garlic is ready for harvest when some of the leaves start to turn from green to yellow. Loosen soil around the bulbs, if needed, and pull up the entire plant. You don’t need to wait until the tops turn brown and flop over like onions, garlic’s cousin.

In the Kitchen

Make your own garlic powder by drying sliced garlic cloves in a food dehydrator and then grinding them with a coffee grinder.
